Vanishing ditch
Paula Häiväoja (1929 – 2011) was the first female chief designer of Kalevala Jewelry. He graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts as a fashion artist in 1953 and started as a designer for Kalevala Jewelry three years later. Häiväoja was the chief designer from 1963 to 1967, when he became a freelance designer and opened his own studio. Today, the ultramodern silver jewelry designed by Häiväoja looks just as futuristic as it did more than half a century ago. The ring bearing the designer's name is not only an example of Häiväoja's characteristic design language, but also a snapshot of the open-mindedness and faith in the future of Finnish design in the 1960s.
